gpm did not seem to function correctly.

If I recall correctly, gpm was program which allowed you to use your mouse for copy and paste on a regular terminal. Not an xterm, we are talking /dev/ttyS0 here. I had a full array of 10 text terminals I could use by using ALT F1 ALT F2 etc
